How Do You Measure Tinnitus?

A common measurement scale is the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI). The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory is a self report questionnaire designed to identify, quantify, and evaluate the difficulties that a person may be experiencing due to tinnitus. In other words, it asses the impact of tinnitus on a person's daily life and well being.

A few things that the questionnaire covers
  • Emotional Reactions (Stress, Anger, Anxiety, Frustration, Depression, etc)
  • Functional Issues (Difficulty with hearing, concentrating, etc)
  • Social Effects (Avoiding being in a social setting or social situations)

How is it scored?
Each question is scored based off a scale ranging from 0 to 4. The higher score indicates a higher level of perceived handicap.

0-16 Slight or No Handicap
18-36 Mild Handicap
38-56 Moderate Handicap
58-76 Severe Handicap
78-100 Catastrophic Handicap
