New Clinical Practice Guidelines and Care for those affected by Tinnitus from Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affair

The Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense will begin offering better care for those affected by Tinnitus as well as implementing new guidelines on the diagnosis and management of Tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no actual external noise is present. The noise can range from a buzzing, ringing, chirping, hissing or other sounds in either one or both ears and in the head.

Tinnitus affects many within the military as they are exposed to loud noises frequently. In the year of 2023, it was reported that nearly 3 million veterans have been diagnosed with Tinnitus. Aside of loud noise exposure, the probability of exposure to chemicals and head injuries may lead to Tinnitus as well.

Within the guidelines, it highlights audiology guidelines featuring hearing aids, cochlear implants, sound therapy and more. In addition, the guideline provides several different ways to manage Tinnitus.
