Every October, the spotlight turns to something we often take for granted, our hearing!
National Protect Your Hearing Month is about raising awareness of noise-induced hearing loss, a condition that’s permanent, preventable, and more common than most people realize.
According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), about 26 million adults in the U.S. have noise-induced hearing loss. And this can range from attending concerts, sporting events, earbuds cranked too high, and even everyday activities like mowing the lawn all contribute to long-term damage.
How to Protect Your Hearing This Month (and Always)
-
Wear high-fidelity earplugs at concerts, clubs, and festivals
-
Keep volume under 60% when using headphones
-
Take listening breaks to give your ears time to recover
-
Know the signs of hearing damage—ringing, muffled sound, or needing to turn the volume up more than usual
